Clijsters through by skin of her teeth Kim Clijsters came within a whisker of defeat as she scraped past Silvia Farina Elia and into the semi-finals of the Gaz de France Open in Paris. Italy's Farina Elia served for victory at 6-3, 5-3 but then managed to win only three points in the next four games as Clijsters came back to win the second set. After an erratic start the Belgian emerged a 3-6 7-5 6-3 victor, making the decisive break in the deciding set to lead 4-3. A disconsolate Farina Elia then lost serve again for the match. "I really made a whole pile of errors today," Clijsters said. "But I've often had difficult matches against this opponent." Clijsters came into the tournament after losing the Australian Open final to Justine Henin-Hardenne. In Melbourne, Clijsters sustained an injury to her left foot. Clijsters faces a semi-final against Russia's Dinara Safina, who beat fifth seed Francesca Schiavone 6-2 4-6 6-4. "That was a really tough match," Safina said. "I'm very happy to make my first semi in this big a tournament." The 17-year-old Russian, sister of former US Open champion Marat Safin, has now won six matches this week - three qualifying rounds and three main-draw encounters. "I feel a bit tired but it's normal," Safina said. The tenacious Schiavone of Italy was Safina's second victory over a seeded player. The Russian eliminated third seed Patty Schnyder, an Australian Open semi-finalist, in the second round. Like elder brother Marat, Safina is an expressive player, shouting, punching the air, bouncing a recalcitrant racket. "Marat say I throw a racket just like him," Safina said.
