[新聞]Sharapova To Defend Her DFS Classic Title
Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova, has announced
today she will be returning to defend her DFS Classic
title at Edgbaston Priory Club, one of the most
prestigious women’s grasscourt tennis events on
the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
The 18-year-old world number two captivated the
tennis world in 2004 winning a host of WTA Tour
events including the DFS Classic, The Championships,
Wimbledon, Seoul, Tokyo and the year ending WTA
Championships title in Los Angeles.
2005 has already seen her win the Toray Pan Pacific
Open in Japan and the Qatar Total Open in Doha. Maria
has also reached the final at the NASDAQ-100 Open in
Miami, and the semi finals of the Australian Open,
Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells and the Telecom
Italia Masters in Rome.
Maria Sharapova said: “Since winning the DFS and
Wimbledon a lot of things have changed both tennis
and social wise, but I’m still the same person. It
all started on the grass courts so I’m very happy
to be coming back. It’s one of those tournaments
that is not too hectic and I can relax and concentrate
more on my tennis. I can go to a private club and work
out instead of being in the public eye.”
She added: “I do feel it is a relaxed atmosphere, it
is a cool little stadium. I have been there the last
two years so when I go there I feel like being at
home. I am always really excited to come back and
to have a full crowd supporting me all the time.”
Marjory Howie, Tournament Director said: “It is
fantastic that Maria has decided to come back to
Birmingham this year to defend her title. She has
had some amazing results since her win last year
here and this year’s tournament will be a great
opportunity for people in the West Midlands area
to come and see the world number two.”
