[新聞]Safin outlasts Santoro, advances in Weber Open
By Roy Kammerer, The Associated Press
HALLE, Germany — Marat Safin survived a match point
Wednesday before reaching the quarterfinals of the
Gerry Weber Open when France's Fabrice Santoro
withdrew in the third set with a thigh injury.
The Australian Open champion led 3-6, 7-6 (9-7),
3-2 when Santoro quit the $800,000 grasscourt event
after his left thigh was taped courtside.
Safin fought through his own knee injury — one the
second-seeded Russian said has plagued him for two
months — for just his second win on grass in three
years.
"It's very painful. On some serves I can't jump,"
Safin said. "But I will play Wimbledon and then
take a month off."
Safin had lost seven of his previous eight matches
against Santoro and came close to defeat again when
he trailed 6-5 in the second set tiebreaker.
Safin survived the scare and Santoro then got hurt
in the second game of the final set.
"He didn't move very well — I was just waiting to
break his serve, then I knew he would quit," Safin
said. "I think I played very well today."
Also Wednesday in the tuneup for Wimbledon, Rafael
Nadal will be out to prove he can adapt to grass,
three days after winning the French Open. The Spanish
teenager faces Germany's Alexander Waske in a
first-round match.
