Sharapova recovers after dropping second set
BIRMINGHAM, England -- Maria Sharapova faced a much
tougher test in the third round than the second round
at the $200,000 DFS Classic on Thursday. She still
passed.
The top seed and defending champion from Russia,
Sharapova moved on to the quarterfinals at the
Wimbledon warmup event with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 triumph
over No. 16 Samantha Stosur of Australia.
The 18-year-old Sharapova, who parlayed the title
here to her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last
year, had dropped just three games in a second-round
win over Anne Kremer of Luxembourg.
Sharapova next will face Eleni Daniilidou of Greece,
who upset No. 8 Ai Sugiyama of Japan, 6-3, 6-3.
Another seeded player from Japan, No. 6 Shinobu Asagoe,
was bounced Thursday. She was felled by Russian Anna
Chakvetadze, 6-4, 6-4. Chakvetadze awaits either
No. 5 Tatiana Golovin of France, the runner-up last
year, or Rika Fujiwara of Japan in the quarterfinals.
Third-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic posted an easy
6-1, 6-4 win over Venezuelan Milagros Sequera in the
third round. She next will face American Mashona
Washington, who beat Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja,
6-2, 6-4.
American Laura Granville, who upset second seed Alicia
Molik of Australia in the second round, beat compatriot
Jamea Jackson, a qualifier, 7-6 (5), 6-4, to reach the
quarterfinals. Granville will face Tamarine Tanasugarn
of Thailand, a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Stephanie
Foretz of France.
First prize is $31,000.
