Match Reports Myskina Sees Off Nakamura Wednesday, June 22, 2005 Anastasia Myskina's 6-4, 6-3 victory over Aiko Nakamura of Japan might have all the signs of a routine victory. It wasn't. Thanks to Nakamura and her resistance the ninth seeded Myskina was under pressure for most of the way as she ground out her win in one hour and 30 minutes on Court 13 and earn a place in the last 32 of the women's singles. They had never played before and perhaps Muskina was caught on the back foot by the determination of the 21-year-old Nakamura to make her mark against the more experienced Russian, a French Open champion in 2004. Myskina must have believed she was going to run through the match when she was 5-1 up in the first set but the next four games told her that she was in one of the more demanding matches which Wimbledon might throw at her. Nakamura was clearly determined to make the most of her debut at Wimbledon. She saved three set points at 5-1, two more at 5-2 and six more at 5-4 before Myskina finally gained a one set lead with a backhand winner down the line hit low, hard and accurately. Myskina had revealed the tension she was feeling by complaining to the umpire about some of the close line calls. However, the more she complained, the more the crowd slow handclapped her. Nakamura had no shortage of ambition. She tried to push Myskina deeper and wider as the rallies grew longer. She started her attack in the second set by holding serve, but Myskina has been around long enough - this is her sixth appearance at Wimbledon - to know that the storm might subside if she raised the stakes. She broke for a lead of 2-1 and in her next two service games survived five break points. If Nakamura was downhearted by this it did not show in her attitude. But the scoreboard told a different story in the later stages, with Nakamura losing her final two service games. On the first match point Myskina drilled a perfect backhand service return winner down the line to win. It was as good a shot as that which ended the first set. But this one was for the match. Maybe the memory of that will serve as suitable inspiration when she tries to reach the fourth round for only the second time.
