Russia, France Set for Rematch in Fed Cup Finals
In a rematch of the 2004 final, Russia and France will once again square
off for the 2005 Fed Cup title.
The two nations advanced to September's finale following dominated
performances during the weekend's semifinal round. Russia defeated a depleted
United States squad, 4-1, while France clinched victory against Spain after
capturing the first three singles rubbers.
The 2005 finals, which will be played the week after the US Open, will be a
repeat of 2004's championship round in Moscow. Russia defeated France, 3-2 in
last November's finale as Anastasia Myskina and Vera Zvonareva won a decisive
doubles rubber, defeating the team of Marion Bartoli and Emilie Loit.
On Sunday, Russia made its four finals appearance in the last seven years by
capturing four of its five matches against the United States.
After Anastasia Myskina defeated Venus Williams and Elena Dementieva powered
past Mashona Washington on Saturday for a 2-0 lead, Russia appeared to be in
solid shape entering the final day of semifinal action. However, Wimbledon
champion Williams came out firing - dropping just three games in a 61 62
route of Dementieva.
In order to avoid the match going into a decisive doubles rubber, Myskina
would need to defeat American Jill Craybas and the Russian player would not
disappoint. Myskina continued her Fed Cup success, defeating Craybas in
straight sets, 62 64 to advance her nation to the finals.
The Russian duo of Vera Douchevina and Dinara Safina would add an exclamation
point on to the victory in doubles, defeating Williams and partner Corina
Morariu, 61 75.
France made its way into the championship round for the third straight year
by capturing the first three singles rubbers against visiting Spain.
Much like Russia, France entered Sunday's finale with a 2-0 advantage after
Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce won Saturday's singles matches. And it didn't
take long for France to move on as Mauresmo defeated Spain's Nuria Llagostera
Vives, 63 61 to seal the victory.
Spain finally got on the board in the fourth round as Arantxa Parra Santonja
defeated Severine Beltrame, 64 64. The doubles rubber was stopped by rain
early in the first set with Anabel Medina Garrigues and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo
up a break in the first set on Mauresmo and Pierce, 2-1.
