MASON - Despite the way it ended, Vera Zvonareva has nothing but fond memories
of playing tennis in Cincinnati last summer.
Second-seeded Zvonareva blazed through the field of the Western & Southern
Financial Group Women's Open, losing only one set before she reached the finals
against Lindsay Davenport. But that's when her game just wasn't good enough.
Zvonareva didn't just lose; she lost her composure, too.
For much of the match, Zvonareva's body language suggested she wasn't equal to
Davenport's game. She broke down emotionally on the court and worsened,
contributing to an easy Davenport championship.
Davenport did not return this year to the Lindner Family Tennis Center, but
Zvonareva is back.
She is again a No. 2 seed, and emotion still fuels her game.
"You always have ups and downs during the match," Zvonareva said. "Maybe I'm
just emotional in my life. I might get upset but I get happy when I get the
points."
Lately, Zvonareva hasn't been getting enough points to keep her ranking close
to the top 10. She has slipped to No. 15 after being ranked No. 9 here last
year. But coming back to Cincinnati, Zvonareva said, should help.
"This is a great tournament for me," Zvonareva said. "It always gives me a lot
of confidence in myself if I did well in a tournament before."
In February, Zvonareva won a Tier III tournament in Memphis, the same
tournament she won the previous year. Since then, however, Zvonareva has
advanced to at least the quarterfinals of a tournament just twice, her best
performance coming in the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome, a Tier I event in May
where she reached the semifinals.
But she has yet to approach the level at which she was playing near the end of
last season when Zvonareva qualified for the WTA Tour championships, squeezing
out Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati for one of eight spots. She lost all
three of her matches in the Los Angeles tournament, but gained valuable
experience.
"That meant a lot to me," Zvonareva said. "It helped me realize that I can be
there near the top. Of course I want to get back into the Top 10 this year.
That's the most important goal for me. I'd like to get into the championships
again, too."
To do that, Zvonareva needs to advance further in tournaments than she has
lately.
She didn't get any favors in Saturday's draw; she faces Meghann Shaughnessy in
the first round. But Zvonareva doesn't intend to change her style against the
American, whom she defeated in February to claim the title in Memphis.
"Sometimes I might get too upset about a shot," Zvonareva said.
"That's just the way I am. I let the emotions out, and then I'm a new person.
I'm just trying to do my best."
