Sharapova to play Gold Coast warm-up
SYDNEY, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Soon-to-be world number one Maria Sharapova will
warm up for the Australian Open next year by playing in the Australian
women's hardcourt tournament in Queensland state, tournament officials said
on Tuesday.
The Russian will top the rankings for the first time on August 22 because
current number one American Lindsay Davenport has missed four straight
tournaments with a back injury.
The Australian hardcourt titles will be played at the Royal Pines Resort on
Queensland's Gold Coast from January 1, two weeks before the Australian Open.
