Ljubicic is Key to Croatia's Hopes
Ivan Ljubicic will look to continue his unbeaten Davis Cup run in
2005 and lead Croatia into its first Davis Cup final when Croatia
hosts Russia in Split. Ljubicic is 6-0 at Davis Cup level this
season.
He defeated Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick in Croatia’s upset win
over the USA in the first round, and also teamed to win the doubles
with Mario Ancic.
A finalist at four ATP tournaments this year Doha (l. Federer);
Marseille (l. Johansson); Rotterdam (l. Federer); Dubai (l. Federer
), Ljubicic also won all three rubbers against Romania in the
quarterfinals. He is riding a nine-match winning streak in Davis
Cup.
Ljubicic’s first match against Russia will be against Russian
No. 2 Mikhail Youzhny. Youzhny holds a 19-18 record on the season
(1-2 in Davis Cup). He was the hero in the 2002 Davis Cup final
when Russia defeated France 3-2 to win the title. In the fifth
rubber of that tie, Youzhny came back from two sets down to
defeat Paul-Henri Mathieu.
The Ljubicic-Youzhny match on Friday follows the first match of
the day between Mario Ancic and Nikolay Davydenko.
Ancic, who was the youngest Croat to ever represent his country
in a Davis Cup tie in 1999, is 36-20 on the season and No. 18 in
the INDESIT ATP 2005 Race, one spot ahead his teammate Ljubicic.
He won his first ATP title this season in 's-Hertogenbosch (d. Llodra).
Davydenko, Russia’s top player, is having a solid season. He
holds an impressive 44-23 record with a title in St. Poelten.
The Russian, who is 3-0 in Davis Cup rubbers this season, will
be looking to put Russia in the Davis Cup final for the first
time since 2002.
