Argentine Guillermo Coria, the No. 2 seed, blasted past defending champion Youzhny 6-0, 6-0 in only 41 minutes in Friday's quarterfinals at the MercedesCup Stuttgart. Youzhny won only seven points in the first set and eight in the second, making it the fourth quickest match of the year. (The shortest being when Feliciano Lopez defeated Irakli Labadze 6-0, 6-2 in Gstaad in 37 minutes.) And this was only the second double bagel of the season. (The other 6-0, 6-0 victory was claimed by Sjeng Schalken over Christophe Rochus in 's-Hertogenbosch.) Unseeded Feliciano Lopez continued his hot play defeating local favorite No. 3 seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-2, 6-4. Lopez, who now has a 3-0 record against Schuettler, has now toppled three seeds this week (No. 7 seed Felix Mantilla, No. 10 seed Younes El Aynaoui and Schuettler) The hard-serving Spainiard is showing that he is a contender on any surface, be it slow or fast. Schuettler dissappointed the German fans, losing the first set fairly quickly and then losing two straight games after the match was tied at 4-4. Also on Friday, Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, the No. 6 seed, stopped the run of Germany's Tomas Behrend, winning their quarterfinal match 7-5, 6-3. This was the first time all week that the Chilean won without being stretched to three sets. Gonzalez enjoyed success in Germany earlier this year, when he helped Chile win the World Team Championship in Dusseldorf. Gonzalez now meets No. 9 seed Tommy Robredo, who rolled into the semifinals by defeating relatively unknown Italian, Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-2. Volandri, like Behrend, had made an incredible run to the quarterfinals, defeating the likes of Sebastien Grosjean and Nikolay Davydenko. But the fiery Chilean was the dominant player on Friday, advancing to his first semifinal of 2003. DOUBLE BAGELS Coria's 41-minute, 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mikhail Youzhny was the second double bagel of the season. 2003: Coria d Youzhny Stuttgart Quarterfinals Schalken d C Rochus, 's-Hertogenbosch Second Round 2002: Canas d Montanes, Bastad Round 2 Hewitt d Ginepri, Cincinnnati Round 1 Golmard d Miyao, Tokyo Round 1 *There was one double bagel in 1999, 2000 and 2001. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Robredo: "It was a tough match. I'm confident. I played better today. I hope to keep going like this. I tried to push too much in the beginning. Filippo is a great player." "I think I'm playing better every day. I'll try to reach my first final of the year. If I continue like this it could be the best year ever for me." Gonzalez: "It was an important win today. He's a good player and it's a good match for me to win. I was a little tired, my match finished late last night, so I was glad to finish it in two sets." About his aggressive style "I like the way I play [with risk]. I don't want to change at all. It's an exciting game and makes for fun tennis. I'm really enjoying the way I'm playing right now and whether I'm in the semifinals or whatever round doesn't really matter to me. About being two matches from winning the Mercedes "I was looking at the car before, but I still have two matches and tomorrow's match with Tommy Robredo will be tough. He's playing well. I'm not thinking about winning - at least not until I get to the final and then maybe I will think about it." About playing Behrend "In the beginning it was tough. I know him but I don't know his style of game that well, so it was a little bit difficult in the first set, maybe I was a little tired also. But I think he was tired too. Then I started serving better and really was gaining confidence." Behrend: "I'm disappointed not to have made it through to the semifinals. I played well, but I was a bit tired physically. The positive thing is that I can keep up with the best players in the world. I played four matches on a good level but I still need to work hard. I had a great week and this gives me a lot of confidence for the coming week." Coria: "I'm very happy, I played perfect. Everything went perfect, I could use all my advantages. I'm happy it was a quick match." "I'm playing my best tennis ever. I hope the crowd enjoyed it." "I like Germany a lot. I won in Hamburg and I hope I can win here as well." About being No. 1 "There are so many good players like Ferrero, Federer and Agassi. I'm working hard to get there at some point." Youzhny: "Something like this can happen. He played very good. I didn't have enough power against him. It really doesn't matter to me if I lose 6-0, 6-0 or 6-0, 6-1. If I had wanted to beat him, I would have had to play unbelievable." Lopez: "It was a great match. I played well from the beginning to the end. Everything I tried went my way. It's only the second semifinal in my career after Buenos Aires, so this is one of the best tournaments for me in my life." Schuettler: "I don't think I played bad. I made a few unnecessary errors. I wanted too much and I finished the points too early. I had no chance in the first set. He served too good. I played a lot better in the second set where I had some break points." "He has a very good serve and forehand. He is one of the best returners." "It wasn't a bad week, but I had hoped for more today. It's disappointing that the match went so quick." "My goal is to be Top Give and to reach the Tennis Masters Cup. It's a long and tough way, but I know that I have my chances." -- 嗜香草可樂,想泡在香草可樂池子裡的變溫動物。 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.101.52 ※ 編輯: esnique 來自: 61.230.101.52 (07/19 09:41)
