Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva gave Russia a commanding 2-0 lead over
Slovenia after the first day of their Fed Cup World Group Quarterfinal in
Portoroz.
It was extremely hot opening day in the Slovenian costal resort with
temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius in the shade. But the away team
bore the heat much better than the hosts.
The Slovenian and Russian players are already good acquaintances from their
junior days. “We were always beating them,” said Slovenian captain Mima
Jausovec, who oversaw Katarina Srebotnik, Tina Pisnik and Maja Matevzic to
several junior successes. But if the Slovenians were the better juniors, the
Russians are clearly taking over in the professional years. They certainly
proved their dominance in front of the Slovenian crowd on the opening day.
In the first rubber Russia’s top player Anastasia Myskina beat Slovenian
second string Maja Matevzic 64 61 to give Russia the early advantage.
It was a very nervous beginning from both players, producing four breaks of
serve in the first six games with Matevzic accumulating a 3-1 lead. But
Myskina staged a successful recovery, producing two breaks of serve to take
the first set by 64. The Russian was then dominant in the second set which
she won 61.
“It was really hot out there on the court. And at the beginning I was really
very nervous. But after a couple of breaks I took some deep breaths and I
started to play better. I am really happy with the good start,” Myskina
said straight after the match.
Matevzic was philosophical about the loss. “I am disappointed because I
didn’t manage to play my own game. But that is always a tough task against
a player like Anastasia. At the beginning she didn’t play well, but after
she raised her level,” she said.
Everybody was expecting a braver performance by Slovenia’s highest-ranked
player Katarina Srebotnik, but the second rubber was even more one-sided.
Elena Dementieva dictated the pace from the very beginning of the match,
winning easily 62 63. The Russian took her second match point on an over-rule
from the chair umpire.
Dementieva said: “I am very pleased with my performance. I was expecting a
tough match because we have known each other for a long time and at the
tournaments we are even practicing together occasionally. I know it could
be tough to play in front of the home crowd and I think Katarina was a bit
nervous because of that. Of course we are very happy with the way the first
day went.”
Srebotnik was far from her best and she won just two games on her serve,
saying: “It just wasn’t my day. My serve let me down. But I also have to
give all the credit to Elena, who outplayed me this time.”
Mima Jausovec assessed the first day. “It seems we were just wishing to
much. Maja had some chances in the first set against Myskina. In the second
rubber Dementieva played some awesome tennis. She was just phenomenal,
looking like the tempted bomb on the court. We have to calm down and analyse
the first day. After that we will discuss possible changes.”
But hope is always the last to die and Sunday is another day. The first match
of the deciding day will be the clash of the number one players. Katarina
Srebotnik is hoping for a turnaround, while Anastasia Myskina is looking
for the deciding third point. Maja Matevzic will then play against Elena
Dementieva. The doubles match between Tina Krizan/Srebotnik and Elena
Bovina/Vera Zvonareva is scheduled as the third match of the day.
