LINZ, Austria - Day three at the 13th Generali Ladies Linz saw main draw wins
for top seed Anastasia Mykina, No. 4 Nadia Petrova and No. 8 Patty Schnyder,
while home favorite Barbara Schett and 2002 finalist Alexandra Stevenson were
upset.
Top seed Anastasia Myskina, playing her first match in two weeks after taking
a break from Zurich, looked rusty at times but was sharp enough when she needed
to to avenge her defeat to countrywoman Elena Bovina in Filderstadt two weeks
ago and move above Venus Williams in the Porsche Race to the Championships
Points Standings into eighth position. Myskina will now face the winner of
Schnyder-Denisa Chladkova for a place in the semifinals.
No. 4 seed Petrova also had to go three sets to overcome her fellow
countrywoman Lina Krasnoroutskaya, winning convincingly in the end 46, 62, 61. Schnyder a
lso overcame her younger compatriot Marie Gaianeh Mikaelian to advance.
Hungary's Petra Mandula upset crowd favourite Schett 63, 63, coping far better
with the pace Schett was giving her. Mandula will face Jelena Dokic next, who
she famously upset in the third round of 2001 Roland Garros, after Dokic had
won the Italian Open.
Tina Pisnik continued her good form (currently at a career-best ranking of No.
30), upsetting 2002 finalist Alexandra Stevenson, who had been suffering from
a heavy cold. Stevenson's recent poor run indoors in Europe has seen her
ranking drop from No. 30 two weeks ago to approximately No. 85 after this
tournament.
Thursday's programme begins at 2pm on Center Court with Zvonareva-Bartoli,
followed by Dokic-Mandula, Chladkova-Schnyder, Pisnik-Stevenson and Serna-
Suarez.
