Russia delay naming Fed Cup team until last minute

MOSCOW, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Russia will delay naming their team for this month's Fed Cup finals until the last possible moment, the country's tennis chief said on Monday.
"We have to submit the names to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) by next week and that's when we will announce our line-up," Shamil Tarpishchev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation and also their Fed Cup captain, told Reuters.
"We don't want to go public with the names because it only makes them (the players) edgy," he said.
Tarpishchev has a tough task naming his squad for the Final Four showdown at Moscow's Olympiisky sports complex, with four players, Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and Vera Zvonareva, ranked in the world's top 13.
In singles, Tarpishchev is likely to go with his top duo, Myskina and Dementieva, who are playing at this week's WTA Tour Championships -- the elite eight-woman event -- in Los Angeles.
The Russians also have a fine doubles player in Lina Krasnoroutskaya, who won a doubles title at Hertogenbosch and reached the Wimbledon semi-finals with Dementieva this year.
Russia face France and Belgium take on the United States in the semi-finals, starting on November 19. The final is on November 22-23 at the same venue.
With both Belgium and the United States missing their top players, the Russians seem clear favourites to land their first Fed Cup title on home soil.
Holders Slovakia exited at the quarter-final stage, beaten by Belgium.
