Ex-Udinese boss Luciano Spalletti sent David Di Michele on the
way to the international scene and now they meet again in what’s
set to be a cracking encounter with Roma.
“I have to acknowledge that Spalletti has given me a great deal
and helped me to reach a very high level in my career,” said the
striker ahead of this weekend’s Serie A clash.
“It’s pointless denying it, on Sunday it will be rather strange
to shake his hand as an opponent before the game. Things have changed
and he is now the Roma Coach, so we’ll do everything we can to win.”
Both teams kicked off the campaign with a victory and this is set to
be a very early battle for that last remaining Champions League spot
behind the probable top three of Juventus, Milan and Inter.
There are many levels to this Week 2 match, as not only is Spalletti
facing the club he took to fourth place last season, but it is also
a return home for lifelong Roma supporter – and new Udinese boss –
Serse Cosmi.
It’s set to be a doubly emotional occasion for 29-year-old Di Michele,
who was born on the outskirts of Rome, but has never actually played
for either of the capital giants.
“As a Roman, to play in my home city would be a dream come true,
but I am achieving a great deal with Udinese. It’s obviously a shame
I’ve never had this experience, as when I was starting out with Lodigiani,
Roma already had Francesco Totti and Lazio had Marco Di Vaio. In any case,
if an offer is tabled then the club must decide what to do.”
Thanks to the Friuli outfit’s remarkable exploits last term, Di Michele
has also reached the international stage and is a contender for a spot
in the 2006 World Cup squad.
“How would I play in a trident attack for the Azzurri? I’d fit in
very well with Totti and Vincenzo Iaquinta, although if Antonio Cassano
was there then it’d surely be great fun.”
This is a trio that could be chosen by Italy boss Marcello Lippi,
or perhaps by Spalletti if rumours of Roma’s interest in Di Michele
is to be believed.
