Roma 1-1 Livorno
Roma were punished by a lucky Livorno side who struck late on to take a point
back to Tuscany. There was also more trouble for Francesco Totti.
First Half
Livorno travelled to the Olimpico as the rock bottom side in Serie A and it
was always going to be a difficult task to obtain points against a second
place Roma side hell-bent on catching Inter at the top of the table. The last
time the Amaranto beat Roma at the Olimpico was 61 years ago and it didn’t
look like that record would change. The Giallorossi got the game underway and
they raced down the pitch to take an early lead but De Rossi was unable to
make the most of Cicinho’s corner.
It was all Roma early on as they dominated the game, Livorno could hardly get
hold of the ball as the Giallorossi passed their way through the Tuscan side.
Tavano showed himself on the break for Livorno but his effort went wide and
behind for a goal kick. Down the other end Roma were awarded a free kick on
the edge of the box for a petulant foul on Totti. The Captain stepped up and
smashed his effort wide as his side kept banging on the door.
There were some concerns for Totti after the striker was seen clutching his
right knee and he looked in discomfort. The number 10 did however decide to
continue playing. He did not look comfortable though despite playing on. The
player seemed to have injured himself after striking an indirect free kick.
He came off for treatment and returned to action much to the relief of
everyone inside the ground. The homeside played some excellent football
which had Livorno struggling, however Roma just couldn’t make their
dominance count as chances went begging.
De Rossi could and should have scored when Vucinic found him in the six yard
box but a great challenge by Grandoni ensured his Livorno side held on. It
was desperate defending but effective as the Amaranto just did enough to hold
on. Once again, Totti went down in pain, his right knee continued to give him
problems, this time however he was replaced with Amantino Mancini as Roma
took no chances.
Second Half
The Giallorossi began where they left off and they kept giving Livorno
problems. The away side coped well with the Roma pressure and Camolese’s men
were always well organised in defence. Tactically they were set up to
frustrate the home side and hit them on the break as and when they had the
odd chance. However it was always going to be a risky game as Roma began to
turn up the heat.
Roma then has Livorno in sixes and sevens as they worked the ball past their
opposition with style and fluency. Great work by De Rossi, Vucinic and
Cicinho created an opening for the Italian midfielder but his volley was just
over. A minute later Pizarro’s superb ball over the top of the Livorno back
line found Vucinic and the big striker headed the ball past the stranded
Amelia who could only watch it creep in under the cross bar. It was a great
goal and a well deserved lead.
Luciano Spalletti’s men upped the ante as they created several excellent
opportunities, however some desperate defending by the away side ensured the
scores stayed down. Nobody really knows how the score stayed down for Roma.
Livorno were lucky the game didn’t turn into a rout as they struggled hard
not to concede further.

Then, like a bolt from the blue, Roma were stunned and punished as Livorno
equalised. It was the Amaranto’s second effort on goal out of the game and
the Giallorossi were made to pay for not making the most of their chances.
Diamanti struck a sublime free kick into the top left corner to rescue a
point for his side. Roma looked shell shocked and they could not believe it.
It was something out of nothing and no doubt it will be the away side along
with Inter and Juventus who celebrate tonight. It leaves Roma’s season on a
knife edge.
