Daniele De Rossi spoke with the media today about Euro 2008, his relationship
with national team managers Roberto Donadoni and Marcello Lippi, as well as
his new contract at Roma and the future of teammate Alberto Aqulani.
The 24 year-old Italian international has prolonged his contract with the
Giallorossi until June 30, 2012. The new deal means De Rossi will earn €
7.2m next season and € 8.1m by the time it runs out.
When asked how a player feels to sign a long-term contract for the club he
supports, De Rossi answered by underlining his gratitude to the club, “The
club and the technical staff here have done good work. There is an eagerness
here to continue to do well.
"No one has mentioned the offers that the Sensi family have turned down for
me. To them goes my gratitude for making me a footballer."
He added: “If I were told to leave, I would be in great dif?culty because I
would never want to move away from here. On a personal level I was pleased to
learn that other clubs were interested in me, but I have always reiterated my
desire to stay."
On the changing of the guard at the helm of the Italian national team De
Rossi confessed, “Lippi is a person who means a great deal to me, as he is
the manager who ?rst brought me to the national side and who had faith in me
after the elbow incident [in the 2006 FIFA World Cup].
“There is a feeling of regret for having missed the penalty against Spain. I
feel for Donadoni because he has always been unlucky in penalty situations,
but I do not think I bear any fault. If we would have defeated Spain in
penalties we would have had a real chance of winning the championship."
Finally, De Rossi touched upon teammate Alberto Aquilani’s contract
situation: “I give advice in private. We spoke on many occasions about the
situation, but one cannot give advice when circumstances are different. There
is the desire on both his part and the club’s to continue the relationship."
