Alberto Aquilani has picked up two successive injuries that have kept him out
for over a month and on Friday he revealed he will not be back for Roma until
2009...
Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani was set to return in his side's 3-1 win over
CFR Cluj, but picked up a quadricep injury before the match.
Thus, he has missed several important matches for his side and now that
Italian international and his club have decided that he will take it easy
until the new year.
"I'm nearly ready to play," said the 24-year-old, according to ANSA. "I spoke
to the coach and we decided that it is an unnecessary risk now."
Indeed, Matteo Brighi has been filling in well in Aquilani's absence, so
coach Luciano Spalletti can afford to rest one of his stars and allow him
time for a full recovery.
"I am happy Roma is doing so well," he concluded. "However, I'm not happy
that I have had to stand by and watch!"
Roma face Cagliari on this weekend in Serie A. Meanwhile, Aquilani is still
involved in contract negotiations with the Giallorossi.

Staying At Roma My Priority – Aquilani
Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani is unhappy to be out injured while his team
are doing so well, but is confident he will play a key role for the club in
the future.
Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani, one of the hottest young prospects in
Italian football, has been sidelined with an injury for the last month, but
will probably be back by January. Today he talked to SkySport24 about his
future and the negotiations for his contract renewal.
"I felt ready to play, but then I talked with the coach and we decided that
it was not a good idea to take any risks and compromise what could happen in
January," said the 24-year-old.
"This injury has taught me that I need to work on my fitness at home as well.
I am happy that Roma are doing well, but I'm not happy that I'm just looking
on right now."
Asked if he can play in each role of the midfield, Aquilani said: "I think I
can with this system, perhaps I would not be the right man for the deep-lying
playmaker role, which I haven't played in much. But I have played in every
other role of the midfield."
On whether he would like to stay as faithful to Roma as Francesco Totti and
Daniele De Rossi, he said: "I have grown up at this club and I've spent half
of my life here. It's obvious that my priority remains Rome and Roma,
forever.
"The contract issue is separate from that, however, we are having talks and
it takes time. We'll see, but I am confident it will turn out well."
Aquilani also recently scored his first goals for the Azzurri, with a brace
in the World Cup qualification match against Montenegro (2-1).
