Turin newspaper Tuttosport today claims that Roma director of sport Daniele Pradé has identified Real Zaragoza central defender Roberto Fabian Ayala as the ideal replacement for Christian Panucci, who looks set to leave the Italian capital after his outburst in Naples last Sunday. It is suggested that the 35-year-old former Argentine international would be open to playing the role of understudy to first-choice centre-backs Philippe Mexes and Juan in Rome and his wages of €1 million per season are also well within the Romans’ budget. Ayala experienced the Serie A stage in the 1990s, with spells at Napoli and Milan, and could free himself from his contract with Zaragoza for a fee of € 700,000. Ayala has also been linked with Lazio in recent days, and La Stampa adds that Roma are trying to beat their local rivals to the punch and could wrap up the deal within the next few hours. The Giallorossi are in the market for an experienced defender after Christian Panucci announced his desire to leave the club at the weekend. Ayala, who will be 36 in April, has been playing in the Spanish Second Division with Zaragoza, but is still performing to an international standard. “There has been no contact between Roma and I about my client, I guarantee that,” said Ayala’s agent Claudio Anellucci. “But maybe Roma have this idea. Still, they have yet to communicate it to us, ” he added, before declaring that Ayala would consider such a move. “Why not? Without a doubt,” he said. “If Roma were to telephone us, we would be willing to look at whatever deal they put on the table.
