Report: Francesco Totti To Sign New Roma Contract
‘Er Pupone’ is allegedly set to pen a contract extension with the
Giallorossi, but there could be friction with Spalletti.
According to Sky Sport 24, Roma captain Francesco Totti is close to reaching
an agreement with the Lupi over his contract renewal, which will see him end
his career at his hometown club.
The 32-year-old’s current deal will run out in 2010 and the parties have
been discussing new terms in recent months.
It is reported that the new deal is worth €5.5 million per year and will
last until 2014, when Totti will likely hang up his boots at the age of 38.
However, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that coach Luciano Spalletti’s
statements at the end of the game with Sampdoria last Sunday could have
repercussions in the Giallorossi's locker room.
The tactician was asked whether Totti’s continued injury troubles could push
the club into looking for a replacement next summer and Spalletti replied
that they will go over this topic at the end of the season, adding, “Romans
think that we can’t play football without Totti and [Daniele] De Rossi, but
it’s not true.”
The local media have questioned the timing of Spalletti’s words,
particularly after Totti played through the pain barrier for 120 minutes
against Arsenal. Some sources have even hinted that the coach could sever his
ties with the club come the end of the campaign.
