Goal.com http://0rz.tw/QaRwr Calcio Debate: The Rome Derby Must Honour The Victims Of The Earthquake After the catastrophic events in nearby Abruzzo, Adam Scime argues this Rome derby should focus more on respect than anything else... The Rome derby is typically a heated affair, a clash with plenty of subtext. The Lazio fans occupy the Curva Nord, their Roma counterparts dwell in the Curva Sud. This tie goes well beyond just sport and can even highlight the political differences between the sets of fans. Tomorrow afternoon though, these ‘normal’ features of the Derby della Capitale should not be on the minds of players, fans, or anyone else related. Earlier this week in L’Aquila, some 110 km away, a devastating Earthquake levelled the area, with a death count of more than 200 people, and thousands left without a home. The Calcio Community has come together swiftly with fund-raisers and volunteers, their efforts hopefully will be focused and sustained. Roma captain Francesco Totti has honourably called for humanity's conscience to take precedence over sport. “We must stay close together and help the people that have been affected by the terrible earthquake in Abruzzo,” the captain stressed in an interview with Sky TG24 on Wednesday. “For now, we must put football aside, as it is a very difficult period in time for those involved. It’s not easy to find the right words to say, but the country as a whole must be united and help those in need. "Right now we must think more outside the world of football, because it is much more important, as there are some people who have been left with nothing as a result of the disaster.” The Giallorossi talisman is on the right track. While the Rome derby has illustrated some of the worst things about Calcio in the past, Totti is demanding it now show the best of itself. The game will go on and it is right that it does, just without the usual petulance associated with it. A night like the one in March 2004 cannot occur. Riots broke out in the stands, rumours of a child’s death, fires, death threats to the players, 13 arrests and 170 people injured. To have something like that transpire once more would be an insult to the true suffering that is occurring nearby. The Romans were even handed an extra reminder on Thursday evening, as aftershocks from the natural disaster are still being felt. The fans of both the Biancocelesti and I Lupi must come together and create a passionate atmosphere, but not a dangerous one. The clubs will certainly do their part with a minute's silence and black armbands. However, since these are two of the closest high profile sides to the disaster area, perhaps they could do a little extra, such as donate gate receipts, as some other squads have confirmed they will do. A great gesture would be to set aside a spectator area for children affected by the disaster, whether they lost a loved one or a home. It would be a fine spectacle and something that would no doubt ease some young people’s minds just for a while. As Totti suggested, humanity should at all times be placed above sport and this is a chance for the sport and it’s supporters to prove it’s true colours. Will they reach out and find some way to help those in need, or look inwards to replicate some of their past charades? If the fans have any respect, it will be the former. Do you think the fans should create a more friendly atmosphere? What can the clubs and their supporters do to help out? Who will win the derby on Saturday? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think... Adam Scime, Goal.com ----------------------------- http://0rz.tw/0L2a6 Roma's Spalletti: Derby Should Have Been Suspended Due To Earthquake Roma's coach expects a tight derby against Lazio, as he remembers the victims of the L'Aquila earthquake... Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is trying to keep focused on the derby against Lazio, as he shows sympathy to the victims of the Italian earthquake. The tactician feels the games in Serie A should have been suspended as a result of the disaster, which has reportedly claimed 289 lives so far. Spalletti held a minute's silence as a mark of respect to the victims before he spoke of the weekend ahead. "Everyone has been affected by this tragedy and I don't understand why Serie A has not been stopped," Spalletti told the club's official website. "Roma and Lazio both head into the game not in the greatest of form, but both teams have the potential to do very well as they have good qualities. "The derby is the derby and it is always a special game. Thinking that one team is better than the other doesn't mean a thing as the victory comes on the pitch." Although Lazio have been locked away in 'ritiro' following shaky form, Spalletti believes it would be wrong to undervalue them. "Lazio are a great squad with a great coach who has always done well wherever he has been," concluded the ex-Udinese boss.
