Ranieri: 'My Roma is different'
Wednesday 2 September, 2009
New Coach Claudio Ranieri promises to focus on fixing Roma’s
defence. “I don’t do champagne football. I am different.”
Luciano Spalletti’s resignation yesterday paved the way for the
former Juventus and Chelsea boss to take charge of his hometown club.
“Just two days ago I was thinking of everything except Roma. It all
happened like in an accident and then you wake up, not knowing quite
how you got there. I left Rome 35 years ago to grow, but I overdid it
and got old!
“In the last four years Luciano showed some of the best football in
all of Europe and from the outside I said the most entertaining teams
were Barcelona, Roma and Arsenal,” began Ranieri in his Press
Conference.
“Spalletti must be thanked for this marvellous work. However, now
there will be changes. I don’t do champagne football and cannot
promise we’ll be as spectacular to watch. I am different.
“What I can pledge is that I’ll give all of myself and you know
what it means to me to be home again after 35 years. This club must
fight for the top spots and the fans deserve to dream.”
This is the Giallorossi’s worst start since 1950-51, when they were
relegated, after losing to both Genoa and Juventus.
“We have to react straight away, look each other in the eyes and
bring out the best for the team. Two games mean nothing, the side
just has to feel strong, ready, determined and able to fight with
anyone again.”
Ranieri is expected to adopt the 4-4-2 system he used at Juve, but he
pointed out that is not necessarily the case.
“In my CV I have every type of tactical system. Give me the chance
to know the team and talk things over, see what is the best option,
but I am not ruling anything out.
“We will try to improve the defence. It’s not an issue of
goalkeepers or defenders, but rather how the team moves as a unit
going forward and back.
“It’s true we have lost Alberto Aquilani, a player I had wanted at
Chelsea, but this is our squad. We have some holes and must do well
to hide them.”
This is his first job since he was sacked by the Bianconeri with two
weeks left in the season.
“Naturally that experience scarred me, but I’m not out for revenge.
I am the same as I ever was, only with more experience.
“I have never made promises to anyone, but more often than not I
exceed what was asked of me. I am a Roman and a Romanista, but I have
travelled far and wide.
“I was born in the Curva Sud, went to away games and was part of the
12th Man. When I lose patience in the locker room, I always go into a
Roman style – even when I was abroad!
“I’m not worried by the lack of funds, as when I first arrived at
Chelsea we qualified for the Champions League without spending a
penny. I want to thank the Sensi family for bringing me home.”
