Julio Sergio conquers Roma
Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Sergio has spoken of the joy he felt at finally
holding down a regular first team place for Roma.
The 30-year-old was Roma’s third choice between the sticks, but injuries to
Doni and Artur have given him time to shine.
He has become something of a favourite among the Giallorossi faithful for his
acrobatic saves and marshalling of the defence.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sergio laughed at the memory of Luciano
Spalletti calling him the best third choice goalkeeper in the world.
“I thought that if I had to be the third, then I might as well be the best.
I asked myself many times why only Spalletti didn’t give me a chance.
“However, I had a great relationship with Spalletti and never asked anything
of him. It was tough. In Brazil I won two League titles and a Libertadores.
“I thought many times about leaving. My family helped me.”
The former Santos and Botafogo stopper went on to recall his bewilderment at
finally being given his first game in Serie A against Juventus in August.
“Spalletti gave me a pat on the chest and asked me: ‘Are you ready?’ For a
moment I thought: ‘Now what do I do?’”
