Roma president Rosella Sensi has leapt to the defence of club talisman Francesco Totti amidst the media frenzy that ensued following the striker’s thumbs-down gesture at the end of last Sunday’s Rome derby with Lazio. “Over the past few days, Totti has been the subject of attention from sports fans and mass media,” reads a note from Sensi on the club’s official website. “The Roma skipper, after he celebrated the victory with his team-mates below the Curva Sud, realised that a gesture, meant for the Giallorossi fans, had been misunderstood and for this he apologised immediately.” Many eyebrows have been raised at the decision not to ban Totti in light of this incident and Inter have accused the Calcio powers that be of double standards. “Totti is one of the few legends in Italian football,” adds Sensi. “He is a positive role model for children. Francesco has the gift of irony.
