2010-11 Transfer Report Card: How Good Were Roma's Signings?
With the season nearing its end, Goal.com's Max De Luca assesses how the
Giallorossi’s new signings fared, and whether the club got it right or wrong
in the transfer market...

After finishing second behind Inter in the 2009-10 season expectations were
sky high for Roma heading into the new Serie A campaign.
Though the club’s financial troubles were well documented there was still a
sense of optimism which hung thick in the air in the Eternal City that this
would finally be the year the Lupi would dethrone the Nerazzurri.
With limited funds available the club were not in a sound financial position
to make any marquee signings and were forced to take some gambles along the
way.
The Giallorossi spent less than €10 million in the summer and could only
watch from the sidelines as all their rivals strengthened their squads in
January.
IN: Adriano (Flamengo), Borriello (Milan), G. Burdisso (Rosario), N. Burdisso
(Inter), Castellini (Parma), Lobont (Dinamo Bucharest), Rosi (Siena),
Simplicio (Palermo)
OUT: Andreolli (Chievo Verona), Julio Baptista (Hercules), Bertolacci
(Lecce), Cerci (Fiorentina), Cicinho (Villarreal), D’Alessandro (Livorno),
Guberti (Sampdoria), Motta (Udinese), Okaka (Bari), Adriano (Corinthians)
Marco Borriello: B
From: Milan
Fee: Loan
Position: Striker
Appearances/Goals: 37/15
The Italian striker seems to be somewhat of a polarising figure among the
Giallorossi faithful but like him or not he has produced the goods for Roma.
He led the team in scoring with five goals in the Champions League and has
done his part in Serie A, finding the net in big games against bitter rivals
Lazio and Milan. Roma will have to pay €10 million for his services after
the current campaign.
Fabio Simplicio: B
From: Palermo
Fee: Free
Position: Midfielder
Appearances/Goals: 26/5
The Brazilian joined the club in the summer on a free transfer and after a
slow start has really come into his own for the Lupi. The 31-year-old has
shown there is still some gas left in the tank with some scintillating
displays in midfield. He has added five goals to the Giallorossi cause as
well and although his form has dipped in recent weeks he has been an asset to
the squad this term.
Nicolas Burdisso: C
From: Inter
Fee: €8 million
Position: Defender
Appearances/Goals: 32/2
Former Roma coach Claudio Ranieri begged the Lupi's top brass to push hard
for Nicolas Burdisso, who had done so well on loan the previous term, and the
Giallorossi eventually landed their man after a protracted tug of war with
Inter. Roma paid €8 million to secure his services on a permanent basis,
which was by far the club's most expensive purchase of the summer. However,
the Argentine hasn't been able to recapture his form of the 2009 campaign and
has hurt his team by letting his emotions get the best of him at some crucial
points this season. His versatility at the back has been useful for the club
but his propensity to lose his head has cost Roma points.
Castellini: C-
From: Parma
Fee: Loan
Position: Defender
Appearances/Goals: 13/0
The veteran was brought into the squad in the summer mainly to provide cover
for first choice left-back John Arne Riise. The 32-year-old has been a bit
part player this season and hasn't contributed a great deal off the bench.
Adriano: F
From: Flamengo
Fee: Free
Position: Striker
Appearances/Goals: 7/0
The price was certainly right for Roma as they handed the former Inter
stalwart a chance to rebuild his sullied reputation after his unceremonious
exit from Serie A in April 2009. However the club were forced to cut the cord
on the Adriano experiment after just seven months as past demons came back to
haunt the Brazilian. His final statline does not make for pleasant reading.
Others
Bogdan Lobont: N/V
The Romanian shot-stopper was on loan from Dinamo Bucharest last season and
Roma exercised their option to make the move permanent for €800,000 in the
summer. The 33-year-old made a valuable contribution early in the season when
Julio Sergio was nursing an injury but hasn't played much since then. A solid
back-up with plenty of experience.
Guillermo Burdisso: N/V
The Giallorossi signed him from Rosario on a season long loan for an initial
fee of €500,000 with an option to purchase the defender for €4.7 million.
Has only made three appearances, all off the bench, this season and looks
likely to be heading back to Argentina in the summer.
Final Grade: C
The air of expectation that hovered over the Roma camp prior to the season
quickly vanished as they stumbled out of the Serie A starting blocks, failing
to pick up a win in their first four matches of the season.
Outspent in the transfer market by the likes of Parma, Sampdoria and even
Bari it was pretty evident that the Giallorossi lacked a strong enough squad
to mount a serious title challenge.
With the Lupi unable to properly reinforce the squad they have taken a step
backward and will have to hope the sale of the club can be concluded sooner
rather than later in order to allow them to spend big in the summer and close
the widening gap on their rivals.
