Totti came to the fore again last night. Same old Totti, right on cue. Just as
he has throughout the epic tale we've been living for many years: twenty years.
What we witnessed yesterday was a story we've seen dozens of times in the past,
but it never gets old; indeed it gets better with every new chapter written.
A story which began on 4 September 1994, when he scored his first career goal
against Foggia at the Stadio Olimpico. Yesterday against Genoa, as
Andreazzoli's men beat the Rossoblu, Francesco added number 225, clocking up
the latest in a long line of milestones in his professional career. Last night
he drew level with Gunnar Nordahl – the legendary AC Milan and Roma forward
from the 1950s – in second place on the all-time Serie A top goalscorers'
list.
Totti hit his favourite penalty, into the left corner, putting the Giallorossi
on course for victory and starting the party at the Olimpico.
And what a reception he got after his 225th goal. "One Capitano, there's only
one Capitano...," the same chant as always. He raised his arms aloft to thank
the crowd. Francesco's fairytale continues and still has some way to run yet.
He will continue to dazzle us as he always has. The tears in his eyes as he
hugged children Cristian and Chanel after the match, showed the latest classy
touch of an incredible man.
98 with his right, 35 with his left, 19 free-kicks, 61 penalties and 12 with
his head: that's how Il Capitano has had the Giallorossi smiling 225 times in
Serie A.

The captain's thoughts after the Genoa match which saw him move into second
place on the all-time list of Serie A top scorers:
"It was a special night, Did I get emotional when my kids came onto the pitch?
Yes, of course: it was a surprise, I didn't know they were coming. When I saw
them come out I was stunned. It meant a lot to have them with me: hugging
Cristian and Chanel was everything for me. That is something I'll always
remember.
"Goal number 225 in front of the Curva Sud? Yes, that made it extra special. I
wanted to equal this record in front of my own fans and I managed it. I had to
score this goal at the Olimpico: it was the only way I could thank all the
fans, for what they've given me and what they continue to give.
"Overhauling Piola? I'll retire when I beat his record. For now though I'm
enjoying this win: the three points were the most important thing about this
evening. What was my best goal? Maybe the one against Sampdoria in Genoa with
my left foot in 2006/07. The most important one though was against Parma on
June 17, the day of our third Scudetto."
