Lisa Raymond

Stosur doubles up in search for form

Samantha Stosur will resume playing doubles next week in a bid to rebuild her
game and confidence followinga forgettable Australian summer campaign.
After early exits from Brisbane, Sydney and the Australian Open, Stosur lost
both her matches in Australia's Fed Cup quarter-final defeat against Italy
over the weekend in Hobart.
Despite travelling at a career-high No.5 in the world, Stosur's form has
flatlined since her stunning first six months of 2010.
The 26-year-old French Open finalist boasted a tour-best 36-9 win-loss record
until Wimbledon last July.
But since then, Stosur has won only 16 of 31 matches and, worryingly, has
fallen into a nasty habit of losing the tight ones.
Stosur enjoyed an 11-match winning streak in Fed Cup before succumbing 7-6
(7-5) 6-7 (7-5) 6-4 to world No.16 Flavia Pennetta on Saturday and 7-6 (7-1)
3-6 7-5 to the fourth-ranked Francesca Schiavone in Sunday's much-hyped
Roland Garros final rematch.
The Queenslander has also lost six of her past eight tiebreakers and admits
she could do with a morale-boosting victory.
"It would be nice that if next time I get into a tight three-setter, I can do
that," Stosur said.
"It's obviously very disappointing to come here and lose two matches,
especially when they're so tight like that. It's just frustrating not being
able to get over the line.
"You feel like you're letting your team down if you can't win a singles match
over the weekend."
A former world No.1 doubles exponent and four-times grand slam doubles
champion, Stosur's net play in particular has suffered since she started
playing singles exclusively after Wimbledon last year.
An injury to her right serving arm also contributed to Stosur dropping
doubles from her schedule but she plans to team up with former American
partner Lisa Raymond in Dubai next week.
"Yeah, maybe without being on the doubles court you don't get a chance to be
in that position of the court so much and it is something that I want to work
on and do more of," Stosur said.
The Florida-based Stosur will have a fortnight off after Dubai, return for
the big American hardcourt events in Indian Wells and Miami, then try to
defend her title in Charleston before turning her attention to the European
claycourt season.
Stosur said doubles would be a week-to-week proposition in 2011.
"There's going to be weeks here and there that I'm definitely going to play
and just see how it goes," she said.
"If everything is still working well and I want to keep playing, then I will.
But I'll do what I did last year. Play when I want to. But if I don't want
to, then I won't."
Stosur remains confident of emerging from her form funk.
"Sometimes you go through patches like this and, as long as you keep focusing
on your game and working hard and trying to get through it, it's going to
turn around and I've got full belief that it can."
