Ebden-Harrison Win First Team Title In Newport
Newport, U.S.A. / by ATP Staff | 10.07.2011
The first-time duo of Matthew Ebden and Ryan Harrison rallied past fourth
seeds Johan Brunstrom and Adil Shamasdin 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 on Sunday in Newport
to clinch the title at the Campbell’s Hall Of Fame Tennis Championships.
Ebden, 23, and Harrison, 19, were each contesting their first final on the
ATP World Tour.
“We said before the match that it’s something we want to start to try to
win some titles,” said Ebden. “We’re extremely happy we managed to do it
here today in Newport. We have to thank the Tournament Director [Mark
Stenning] for giving us a wild card or we wouldn’t have gotten in the event.
Hopefully we can take this and move on to bigger and better things.”
Harrison added: “It was extremely exciting. We were talking about it
beforehand. We were looking forward to trying to get our first title and
putting ourselves in a position where we could play in these events. Looking
forward to the future.”
Ebden and Harrison fought off nine of the 11 break points faced on serve in
the final, including all three in the second set, while capitalising on two
of their three opportunities.
The Australian-American duo prevailed in a Match Tie-break for the third time
in four matches this week, with one of those wins coming against top seeds
Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram in the quarter-finals.
“Those Match Tie-breaks make it very exciting and fun for the crowd, but it
makes us as players a bit nervous; a little bit who can play well under those
pressure points,” admitted Ebden. “We handled our nerves quite well all
week. We had a few tough matches, but we tried to stay relaxed and focused on
our games. We really believed that if we did our stuff well that we could win.
”
Harrison said of their ability to handle the pressure: “Matt was very
persistent with telling me to just make sure we hustled out every point and
make sure we stayed solid and stayed mentally positive throughout the whole
thing. It’s just one or two points here and there.
“It’s one of those things where we kept battling, even though a couple
things were going against us. We had a little bit of bad luck in the
beginning of the first set. We just stayed positive and we were trying to
stay as focused as possible. We got some things to go our way.”
Brunstrom fell to a 1-9 mark in ATP World Tour finals, having won his lone
title in 2010 at Gstaad, and reigning Johannesburg doubles champion Shamasdin
dropped to a 1-1 mark. They were playing in their second tournament together
after first teaming up last month in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
