Matthew Ebden and Ryan Harrison lifted their second team trophy on Sunday,
topping Xavier Malisse and Michael Russell 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the BB&T Atlanta
Open final at Atlantic Station.
After splitting sets, the Australian/American duo won seven of their eight
service points in the deciding Match Tie-break to defeat Malisse and Russell
in 84 minutes.
“The way we play, we always try to push forward and play aggressive. That’s
the way both of us are comfortable playing. It comes down to execution for us,
” Harrison said.
“It doesn’t matter if its singles, doubles, triples or whatever it is. If
you win titles, you can always build off of it, so we’re really fired up.”
With the victory, Ebden successfully defended the crown, having triumphed
last year with Alex Bogomolov Jr.. He and Harrison add to the title they won
on their team debut at the Campbell’s Hall Of Fame Tennis Championships in
Newport last year. They have a 12-3 record together.
“We had a few chances in the second set and felt like we weren’t playing
our best tennis. We were pretty confident if we lifted our level a little, we
’d come through,” said Ebden.
“We’re very good friends. I think it helps on the court. It’s great to
find someone you really enjoy playing with. You get a lot out of it. Not just
the wins, but you get improvements in your game.”
Malisse was aiming to win his second title of the year after capturing the
SAP Open crown in San Jose with Mark Knowles. He dropped to a 7-4 final
record. Russell was contesting his first career ATP World Tour final, singles
or doubles.
