-- We call Sam about 9 am since we know she needs her tennis rest. She’s a self-proclaimed coffee lover, so we suggest heading to Housing Works Bookstore Café in SoHo. “I love my coffee and I always love finding the best coffee shops everywhere I go,” Sam says over the phone. Great! We meet there at 10. We spend our time sipping on a cappuccino as Sam tries to explain to us what a flat white is (an Australian version of a latte). We suggest shopping in SoHo, but Sam isn’t necessarily feeling it. “I don’t know. I’m not a big shopper. I only do it if I have to and if I find something I like,” she says. It appears she already went shopping in SoHo a few days prior. “I did do a bit of it the other day when I got a pair of new jeans and a few t-shirts. We were down on Prince Street.” Ugh. OK, Sam. No fighting the bargain crowds together. So, with the option of shopping out, we want to know which tennis player she thinks would be the best to hit up the shops on Fifth Avenue with—and maybe the US Open Collection Store. US Open Collection Store 。 “Roger Federer, I guess,” she says. “He always looks good on court and he’ s got the money to back it up.” Well, we’re broke. So how about an impromptu tour around New York? We ask Sam if she can suggest a tour guide. “Well, if you wanted knowledge, I think my old doubles partner Lisa Raymond who lives not far from here and spends quite a bit of time in New York.” Sounds perfect. We call Lisa, but she’s not home, her answering machine saying something about being out on the town with her bronze medal. We suggest taking the subway to Midtown, but Sam, who took the Metro around Paris during the French Open (and even rented the public bikes there!) isn’t jiving with the MTA. “In Paris, I was riding the train, yeah. Sometimes it’s the best way to go about it,” she tells us. “[But] I haven’t had too many bad cab experiences here like I did in Paris to get me underground.” “ Fine, well take a cab. Next stop: We’re off to the Public Library to do some reading. “Does anyone ever go to a library anymore?” Sam asks us, before admitting: “I have no idea. Everyone’s always playing games on their iPads I think.” “ So… the library is out. Too bad since we were looking forward to re-reading Andre Agassi’s scintillating memoir. Instead, we’re headed to the Empire State Building for some sightseeing. As we walk on 34th Street we ask Sam, “ Of all the players, who do you think is most likely to climb the Empire State Building?” “Novak Djokovic. He’s pretty lean at the moment, so I reckon he’d do a pretty good job at it,” she tells us. We’re thinking Andy Murray would’ve made a good option since he showed good hops by climbing into his player’s box after his Olympic win. But, Novak’s a good choice too. “ Novak Djokovic。 After the Empire State Building, we head to get a New York staple: a street hot dog. Again, we quiz Sam, this time asking, “If you could buy a hot dog from any tennis player, who would it be?” “Andy Roddick,” she giggles. “I think he could make the whole experience of buying a hot dog pretty fun.” We buy street pretzels from someone not named Andy Roddick instead. They are deliciously salty. Now it’s time to take in Sister Act on Broadway, which Sam says she couldn’t qualify to be in. “You have pretty good moves,” we tell her, referring to the Stosur Shuffle she’s been doing on court. “I’ve got one move,” she clarifies. “And that’s it.” Sam tells us that Andrea Petkovic would be the best player to be in a Broadway show, because she “does the dances after the matches, so I think she would be the kind of person to do that kind of thing.” Is Sam sure she doesn’t want to be a backup dancer? “I’m not going to take that crown,” she laughs. We walk by M&M world in Times Square after the show and ask Sam who might go into the candy business next. (超沒創意的 = =) “I think Maria has got that one sewn up,” she tells us. “ 瑪莉亞莎拉波娃 ” Now, it’s off to a Yankees game in the Bronx, where Sam has already been earlier this week. “I did go to a Yankees game the other night, which was good fun,” she tells us. And who would she invite of all the players if she could? “The one guy I always hear talking about sports is John Isner. I don’t know if he’s a big baseball fan or just football or what, but he’d definitely be the one to get the gossip on who’s winning and who’s losing.” ” With the Yankees game over and our Andy Roddick-imagined hot-dog seller all closed up, it’s time for Sam to head back to her hotel, and us to our apartment in Brooklyn. “Hey Sam, if any player lived in Brooklyn, who might you imagine it to be?” “I think Svetlana Kuznetsova,” she says. “She seems to like being a little bit alternative.”
