Agassi Wins Fifth Siebel Open Title
The American ties John McEnroe with five Siebel Open titles.
ATP Champions Race leader Agassi became the first two-time winner on the ATP
circuit this season when he defeated Davide Sanguinetti 6-3, 6-1 in the Siebel
Open final in San Jose. Agassi also moved to within 135 points of Lleyton
Hewitt and the No.1 position in the ATP Entry Rankings.
Agassi dropped his serve three times in five matches during the week. In his
last nine matches (four going back to the Australian Open) he has lost serve
four times while breaking opponents 44 times.
The 32-year-old American won his fifth Bay Area title (1990, '93, '95, '98, '03
), tying John McEnroe for the most titles in the Open Era. Agassi's 12-0 match
record is his best start to the season since 1995 when he began with a 15-0
mark.
Agassi won his 56th career title, one short of Ilie Nastase, who stands No. 7
in the Open Era titles list. He also won his 750th career match (750-231).
Agassi said: "It feels great and every win means so much to me. Between now
and a year ago a lot of questions have been answered and I couldn't be happier
where things are.”
The 30-year-old Sanguinetti became the first Italian to reach the Siebel Open
final since Renzo Furlan captured the title in 1994 (d. Chang). Sanguinetti was
appearing in his sixth career ATP final (2-4) and his first since winning
Delray Beach in March 2002. Sanguinetti said: "I'm feeling great and this final
was important because I have a lot of points to defend in the next three weeks.
I hope to make more finals."
Hyung-Taik Lee and Vladimir Voltchkov, teaming for the first time, defeated
Paul Goldstein and Robert Kendrick 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. It was the first ATP doubles
title for both players
