In the last of four thrilling quarterfinals, Agassi outlasts El Aynaoui in
three set.
Andre Agassi will play Albert Costa in the semifinals on Saturday.
The quarterfinal matches just got better and better. In the last of the four
quarterfinal matches -- all of which went three sets -- Andre Agassi and
Younes El Aynaoui put on a tremendous display of tennis as a pair of
30-something stars entertained a packed house at the Tennis Center at
Crandon Park on Friday.
In one many have called the match of the tournament, Agassi took control
in the third set, stepping up his game to defeat the Moroccan, 7-6(6), 4-6,
6-1.
With El Aynaoui coming to net and Agassi attacking with his trademark
groundstrokes, the match-up of distinct styles and variety could not
have been better.
"I think it's a joy to play Younes for many reasons," said Agassi after
the match. "First of all, he's a great talent. I think his style of play
is phenomenal. The way he plays the game, it's a pleasure to watch because
you're convinced he not going to be able to do it [at his height]. The way
he serves, so effortless. He can really serve to a dime. He's also truly
one of the best guys... on and off the court."

After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, El Aynaoui found himself down
a break in the second. But summoning his best attacking, all-court game,
El Aynaoui broke back twice in a row on Agassi's serve to extend the match
much to the delight of the crowd.
But the eight-time Grand Slam champion would not let the momentum shift.
Agassi took control to start the third set and never looked back. Agassi
didn't hit a single unforced error in the third set while coming up with
nine winners.
"My goal in the third was just to make him keep that standard of tennis
up, and I was hoping for more looks," said Agassi. "I was hoping he would
miss some first serves, which he did in the third. And for me, it was about
knuckling down more than about stepping it up."

For his part, El Aynaoui left the court to the loud cheers of the Miami
public, which included a sizeable Moroccan contingent.
"I'm not mad at myself. I missed one opportunity in the first set. That
was it," said El Aynaoui. "Every time I play against Andre it's a great
experience. I'm happy to see I can give [him] some trouble... This is
all I've dreamed about since I've been playing tennis, to play Andre
on the center court of the tournament."

Agassi now meets Roland Garros champion Albert Costa in another match-up
of differing styles. Agassi takes the ball early and hits hard, Costa
stands further back from the baseline using a variety of spins and
slices to move the ball around.
"He's obviously been playing great," said Agassi of Costa. "You
wouldn't pet him to be a great hard court player, and he's learned
how to win on this surface, so it's been great watching him adapt...
Hopefully, I can dictate the match."
