The word off the court is that Andre Agassi did recently receive another
shot of cortisone to treat his sciatic nerve injury, but it didn't kick
in soon enough (or at all) to convince him that hopping on a plank to
Wimbledon was a good idea. Thus, his pullout.
Agassi has decided to enter the Mercedes Benz-Cup in LA, which begins
the week of July 23. He is then planning on playing Washington, Montreal,
Cincinnati and the US Open, a pretty full summer of hardcourt tournaments
for a man who hasn't been consistently healthy for two-and-a-half years.
The 35-year-old is likely figuring that he has a better shot to win the
US Open than Wimbledon, which in his current physical state, is the right
way of thinking. But given his results over the past year, he really only
has an outside shot in NYC. Agassi has a better chance of retiring there
than he does of winning the title. Too sad.
