Rod Laver vs. Ken Rosewall:
The Open era began fittingly, with these Australian greats meeting in
the finals of the first event, Bournemouth, and the first major, Roland
Garros. Four years later, they played in a seminal match of the new pro
era, the final of the 1972 WCT Championships in Dallas. Laver had the
better career, but Rosewall won all three of those matches.
Margaret Court vs. Billie Jean King:
The shy Aussie and the fierce Californian attacked each other in dozens
of big matches. Court won their famous 1970 Wimbledon final, but it was
left to King to avenge Court's Mother's Day defeat at the hands of Bobby
Riggs.
Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova:
The rivalry to end them all. Over 16 years, the cool, blond American
baseliner and the volatile Czech serve-and-volleyer faced off 80 times,
14 of them Grand Slam finals. Navratilova won 43, Evert 37.
Bjorn Borg vs. John McEnroe:
Rivalries defined the men's game in the 1970s and '80s--Borg-Connors,
McEnroe-Connors, McEnroe-Lendl were all cutthroat affairs. But Borg
and McEnroe offered the purest contrast. They brought the game to a new
peak with their four Slam finals in 1980 and '81, and they ended up
deadlocked at 7-7.
Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi:
Their old school (Sampras) vs. new school (Agassi) battles defined the
game in the 1990s, even if their matches rarely lived up to the hype.
Sampras finished with a 20-14 edge.
Martina Hingis vs. Venus Williams:
The tense showdowns between these two helped revive the women's game
in the late 1990s. Hingis started on top but Williams wore her down and
took over No. 1. The turnaround helped drive Hingis into retirement
at 22--but with a 10-9 edge over Williams.
