Agassi, the only man in the field to have lifted a Masters Cup title - his
came in 1990 in Frankfurt - stormed through a comeback in convincing style
to dismiss any hopes for Ferrero to stay in the struggle for the top spot.
The result also ensured that Roger Federer would qualify for the semifinals.
Agassi and Nalbandian will play for the other semifinal berth from the Blue
group when they meet in round-robin competition.
Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, lived up to his American Idol
status in front of a crowd which included President George H. W. Bush, a
part-time Houston resident.
Agassi, 33, recovered with style from a 2-6 disaster in the opening set,
rallying from his traditional stronghold on the baseline to drain away
the Ferrero confidence in a victory which took one hour, 32 minutes to
construct.
Ferrero has lost both of his group matches and will need to regroup before
ending his season at the Davis Cup final in Australia. Agassi has moved
onto possible further glory at a tournament where he stands as the
definition of the American game.
Ferrero, the Roland Garros champion, had beaten Agassi in the pair's
previous two meetings, a year ago in Shanghai at the Masters Cup and in
the US Open semifinals two months ago.
Agassi had the last word on the night as he reversed a run of five
successive losing matches in Tennis Masters Cup play. At 2001 TMC Sydney,
he lost his last two round robin matches, and he lost two round robin
matches at 2002 TMC Shanghai before withdrawing with a hip injury.
