Pujols reaches milestone in first inning
First to start career with seven years of 30 homers, 100 RBIs

MILWAUKEE -- The streak Albert Pujols cared most about came to an end several
days ago when the Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention for the
first time in four years. But one of the streaks for which Pujols is most
famous lives on.
The slugger hit a solo home run in the first inning on Wednesday night
against Brewers starter Carlos Villanueva, giving him an even 100 RBIs for
the year. In each of his seven Major League seasons, Pujols has hit at least
30 homers and driven in at least 100 runs -- and he is the only player in the
history of the game who can say that.
"It's always awesome," said Pujols. "It's an honor to get 100 RBIs. That's
tough to do every year. But I wish I could trade that and be in the
postseason, playing next month. But that's the way it goes.
"Obviously I need to thank my teammates because I couldn't do it by myself.
They're getting on base, being aggressive running the bases. It's a big
accomplishment that hopefully I can continue to do."
With two outs and the bases empty in the first, Pujols drilled an 0-1 pitch
to right field. It was his 32nd long ball of the season and No. 282 of his
career. The RBI was Pujols' 858th.
"I congratulated him," said manager Tony La Russa. "It's historic. Some of us
who have been around have had a chance to see it, to see history. That kind
of excellence, from the first year of your career, it's historic. ... When
you think of who's played this game and [that he is] the only guy that's ever
done that, I don't know what more you can say."
Pujols has two concurrent streaks still on the line, one almost certain to
continue and one likely to end. He has hit at least .300 in every season of
his career, and with a .325 mark in the season's final week, that is almost
certain to reach a seventh year. Pujols has scored at least 100 runs in every
big league season as well, but he will have a difficult time making it
seven-for-seven there.
His homer, plus two more runs later in the game, gave him 96 for the year
with four games to play. Pujols is playing on a strained calf, and he is
extremely limited as a baserunner, so it is difficult for him to score, but
the mark is at least within reach.
"I smell it," he said. "It would be awesome if I can get four more. That
would be big. But I still want to get my walks, too. ... Getting 100 [RBIs]
and 100 walks and 100 runs, it would be big with the injuries I've been
having this year. But we'll see how we're going to play it. Obviously I'm not
going to try to be stupid."
Pujols drew his 98th walk of the season on Wednesday, a new career high.
