Fans still have time to vote Pujols in
Online voting at MLB.com ends June 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
All-Star balloting at first base in the National League has come down to a
battle of philosophies, or perhaps simply of fan bases.
Either way, with less than a week to vote, Albert Pujols trails Milwaukee's
Prince Fielder in the voting to be the starting first sacker in the Midsummer
Classic on July 10 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Cardinals fans can get
their vote out online at MLB.com until June 28 to see their man in the
starting lineup once again.
While Fielder has been the dominant offensive first baseman in the league
this year, with 26 homers and a .635 slugging percentage, Pujols is
recognized as the preeminent player at the position over a period of years.
That makes for an interesting voting decision, but whichever way one leans,
the key is that time is running out.
Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times with the Monster 2007
All-Star Online Ballot at MLB.com and all 30 club sites until Thursday, June
28 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Fans will again be given the opportunity to cast an All-Star vote immediately
following the 2007 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show Presented by Chevrolet,
which will be televised by Turner Sports on Sunday. Baseball fans around the
world will be able to select the final player on each All-Star team via the
Monster.com 2007 All-Star Final Vote.
Selecting the rosters isn't the end of the fun in 2007, either. Concluding
the All-Star balloting process, fans will have the opportunity to participate
in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player presented by
Chevrolet at the All-Star Game via the Monster.com 2007 All-Star Game MVP
Vote at MLB.com.
The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports and televised
around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will
provide exclusive national radio coverage, while MLB.com will offer extensive
online coverage and MLB Radio will have exclusive play-by-play coverage of
the game on the Internet.
Besides Pujols, Scott Rolen and David Eckstein also remain factors in the
voting, though they have a much taller hill to climb. Each stands in fifth in
the balloting at his respective position. Rolen trails a group that includes
David Wright and Miguel Cabrera, while Jose Reyes and J.J. Hardy lead the
shortstop voting.
Pujols has started the All-Star Game four times -- twice as a first baseman,
once as a third baseman and once as a designated hitter, when Derrek Lee beat
him out as the starting first baseman.
