SAN FRANCISCO -- Albert Pujols of St. Louis has agreed to participate in the
State Farm Home Run Derby on Monday, Major League Baseball officials
confirmed Sunday.
The six-time All-Star joins Milwaukee's Prince Fielder, Philadelphia's Ryan
Howard, Florida's Miguel Cabrera, Minnesota's Justin Morneau, Detroit's
Magglio Ordonez and Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in
the eight-player event, with one participant still to be named.
Pujols, tied for 17th in the Major Leagues with 16 homers entering play
Sunday, has hit 34 or more home runs in each of the last six seasons and has
averaged 44 per season over the last three years, including a career-best 49
home runs last season.
Pujols has competed in the Home Run Derby once previously, finishing second
to Garret Anderson of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2003 Derby at
U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Pujols hit 26 home runs that year, a one-time
total that has been topped only twice under the current format, by
Baltimore's Miguel Tejada (27 in 2004 at Houston) and Bobby Abreu (41 in 2005
at Detroit).
The 78th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally
Tuesday by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and
televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with
pregame ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m. ET. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive
national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online
coverage. XM will provide satellite radio play-by-play coverage of the XM
All-Star Futures Game.
