NEW YORK — Albert Pujols provided the Cardinals' winning runs Saturday with
a homer, their only run Sunday with another homer and in between insisted
there was nothing to his recent stretch without a homer.
His manager agreed, saying it was never the swings. It was the pitches.
The two home runs in as many days against the New York Mets "is because he
had two pitches to hit," Tony La Russa said after the team's 9-1 loss at Shea
Stadium. "I've said this a thousand times. He's as strong as ever. If he gets
pitches to hit, he's going to hit the ball hard. A lot of them are going to
leave the park. He doesn't get pitches to hit — then he hits .300."
Pujols' 20th home run of the season came in the seventh inning Sunday off
Mets ace Johan Santana. His two-for-four Sunday completed a seven-for-12
rebound after Friday's 0-for-five, three-strikeout game, only the second of
his career with those blemishes.
His winner in the 14th inning Saturday delivered a 10-8 victory for the
Cardinals and was his first home run since July 4, a span of 68 at-bats.
Afterward, he really unplugged.
"I'm a line-drive hitter with power," Pujols said, sternly. "I don't care
about the home runs. Every time somebody in the media says something stupid
and talks about home runs, I always come up the next day and hit some."
His first since Independence Day ended a marathon evening at Shea Stadium and
made a winner of Brad Thompson (3-2). The game lasted 5 hours, 9 minutes and
included 16 pitchers making 517 pitches. The Cardinals squandered two leads
in the game — the first lost by starter Joel Piñeiro and the second lost on
a solo home run by Fernando Tatis in the ninth.
Pujols' fifth hit of the game was a two-run shot to left-center field off
Mets reliever Aaron Heilman (1-4). Combined with Skip Schumaker's six hits,
Pujols made a little history. They became the first Cardinals tandem to each
have at least five hits in a game since May 1930, when Charley Gelbert and
Taylor Douthit each had five hits against the Cubs.
Pujols scored three runs and drove in three runs.
Those are the measures he monitors, he said.
La Russa winces when a player or a lineup is described by its ability to hit
home runs — or a lack thereof. Pujols, likewise, insists he is not defined
by his power, that he rejects the label of slugger. As he went without a home
run for most of July, he upped his average from .348 to .353. He's now in
clear pursuit of Chipper Jones for the batting title.
Sunday was his 10th multi-hit game of the month.
"You guys can look at home runs," he said. "I look at how I'm producing for
my ballclub — getting on base with hits, driving in runs whenever I can. ...
With a good swing, the home runs will come."
Quipped La Russa, "There's nothing wrong with his power. Evidently."
