[mlb新聞]Tough 12th sinks Halos
摘錄自安納罕天使隊官網
Maicer Izturis hit a two-out RNIdouble in the ninth to force extra innings.
Izturis later reached third with one out in the 12th but was stranded when
Iose Lopez grounded into a double play, and the Halos fell a half-inning
later. Jered Weaver pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in his
career.
A's take opener in12th; Halos need next two to stay alive
Angels' hopes shrink after walk-off loss
OAKLAND -- There's still tomorrow.
The Angels are hanging on, barely, and are still a mathematical factor in an
American League West race that is essentially over but has yet to be decided
officially.
So despite taking a 5-4 loss fro, the A's on Friday night and seeing their
number ti elimination whittled to games in a division they've won the
last two years, the Angels can still come to the park on Saturday as
something other than mere caretalers gor the remaining games on the schedule.
The Angels' number to elimination in the AL Wild Card was also reduced to two
games, and the club is eight games back of the A's with just nine games left
in the regular season.
"Our backs have been against the wall for a while, and we have to get on a
roll and have to continue on a roll," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We have to
come out tomorrow. Our guys won't quit."
It was a game in which both sides had their chances to win, but squandered
opportunities. Despite hitting three homers, the A's committed two mental
errors in the ninth inning with the second resulting in the tying run scoring
for the Angels.
An inning earlier, Scioscia allowed Jered Weaver to start the eighth even
though the rookie had already logged 102 pitches. Milton Bradley followed
with a two-out, tie-breaking solo homer that briefly gave the A's a lead.
And neither Scioscia nor A's manager Ken Macha seemed all that interested in
laying down a bunt in the late innings to get a runner into scoring position.
Eric Chavez singled to lead off the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner
Antonio Perez, but Macha didn't bunt him over, and the inning ended on a
double play. Garret Anderson later singled to lead off the 11th, but Scioscia
allowed his Angels to swing away, and they went in order.
At least Milton Bradley provided some theater when he was ejected by the
home-plate umpire in the bottom of the 11th for arguing a called third
strike.
So it was left to Marco Scutaro to provide the moment of the night, and the
shortstop gave the A's their seventh straight come-from-behind win and 46th
this season when he launched a deep fly ball to left-center with one out in
the 12th that rendered a five-man infield moot for the game-winning hit off
Angels reliever Francisco Rodriguez.
With runners on the corners, Scioscia brought center fielder Chone Figgins in
as the fifth infielder near second base, but Scutaro drilled an 0-2 pitch
from Rodriguez that landed on the warning track and put the Angels' season on
life support.
"I've faced him many times before. I was trying to get a fastball away, but
he got on top of it pretty good," Rodriguez said. "Bottom line, that was my
fault, but we have to turn the page and forget that and come back [on
Saturday]."
Bobby Kielty opened the inning in a pinch-hitting role for Perez. Kielty
jumped on a slider for a leadoff double into the right-field corner and went
to third on Jay Payton's ground ball to the right side. After Nick Swisher
was walked intentionally, Scutaro then hit the game-winner.
Swisher, Eric Chavez and Bradley all hit solo homers as Brad Halsey (5-4)
picked up the win in relief; Rodriguez (2-3) took the loss.
"Our guys didn't quit but the bottom line is we lost the ball game," Scioscia
said. "We did a lot of things right on the field but they played better and
finished it off on the field."
The A's got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Jason Kendall
walked to lead off the inning and Mark Kotsay followed with an RBI double to
left-center for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Swisher put the A's up, 2-0, when
he jumped on a 1-2 pitch from Weaver and drilled his 33rd home run of the
year.
The Angels got two back in the top of the sixth when Figgins singled to
center and stole second to lead off the inning. Maicer Izturis then got
aboard on an infield single and after Orlando Cabrera's sacrifice advanced
both runners a base, Vladimir Guerrero was walked intentionally to load the
bases.
Juan Rivera followed with an RBI single to center and after Robb Quinlan
popped up to the left side of the infield, Anderson lined an RBI single to
left to score Izturis and tie the score at 2 but Jay Payton threw out
Guerrero at the plate to end the inning.
Howie Kendrick jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Barry Zito to lead off the seventh
with his fourth a home run, a long fly that reached several rows back in the
left-field bleachers at McAfee Coliseum, to give the Angels a 3-2 lead, but
Chavez hit the equalizer in the bottom half of the inning on a 3-1 pitch from
Weaver for his 21st homer this season.
Bradley hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth, but the Angels tied the
game in the top of the ninth when Izturis dropped a shallow pop-fly double on
which Payton nearly made a circus diving catch.
But the ball squirted free and Payton, while on ground, made three stabs at
the ball but could not find the handle and pinch-runner Erick Aybar scored
from first. Earlier in the inning, Payton and Scutaro allowed a pop fly to
drop between them but got a force out at second base
Weaver allowed all four runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts
over 7 2/3 innings, while Zito allowed three runs on seven hits and three
walks with six strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings but neither starter figured into
the decision.
"I felt like I threw the ball well but a couple of pitches they hit out of
the park," Weaver said. "But there isn't much you can to but shake your
head."
