Mailbag: What happened to deal for bat? 按!不是說要來交易來大棒子?人咧? What happened to an Adam LaRoche deal? The Braves have made it clear they want Chone Figgins. Figgins is expendable as Maicer Izturis is a much better fielder and hitter. Why not trade Figgins and Casey Kotchman along with a Minor Leaguer (not one of the top prospects, however) for LaRoche? He is young. He has the power bat the Angels desperately need and is from Orange County! He is a perfect fit for the Angels. The Angels are believed to have offered Figgins and Kotchman. Even Jeff Mathis' name came up during negotiations, but as clubs like the Pirates also expressed interest in LaRoche and included pitching in return, the Braves began asking for Scot Shields. General manager Bill Stoneman believes his club will win this year because of its pitching staff. He was resolute in his stance to retain his starters and retooled the bullpen in the process with the additions of Justin Speier and Darren Oliver. If the Angels can move the Braves off pitching, the deal still makes sense. Many teams are in need of a leadoff hitter, and just about every manager would love to have Figgins' speed in his lineup. And since teams have to give up something to attract something in return, the Angels have been willing to listen to trade offers concerning Figgins. The issue with Figgins has been the lack of a natural position. He is capable of playing many, and the Angels have moved him around where needed. That appears to be the case again, as Figgins likely will see time at third base and in the outfield with the injury to Juan Rivera. But most clubs also prefer to have a regular starter instead of employing a platoon. Kotchman first must prove he's healthy and fully recovered from mononucleosis, but reports in winter ball have been positive. Kotchman also has to shake the rust of nearly a year off from playing baseball. But everything being equal, Kotchman probably has the edge. It was Kotchman who allowed the Angels to take a gamble and move Darin Erstad back to center field last season. Erstad was a Gold Glover, but Kotchman is an excellent fielder. Morales' skills in the field are not nearly as refined, and he is more likely suited to a designated hitter role. Compare offensive numbers at the Major League level, and Kotchman also has the edge. Morales hit .409 in his first five games with the Angels last season but hit .211 in 52 games after that. Kotchman struggled initially in his first callup in 2005 but over the last 40 games of that season, he hit .302 with seven homers. This could be the best competition for the Angels in Spring Training.
