Sometimes, city employees let them in, nicely, and sometimes, when there was nobody around, the two had to hop a fence. Once inside, the two worked on simplifying Saunders' delivery, and making the delivery of his fastball and his off-speed stuff uniform -- to better disguise the identity of his pitches. Some scouts thought several years ago that Saunders was a fringe type of talent, with underwhelming stuff, but he is turning out to be much better than that. He throws his fastball in the low 90s, and hitters are struggling to discern his hard stuff from the soft stuff he is throwing, regardless of whether he's throwing from the windup or the stretch. With runners on base, opponents are hitting .191, and .210 without runners on base. "Joe has a lot of poise on the mound," said Butcher the other day.
