By Ian Hawkey ALEXANDER HLEB comes from Belarus, White Russia as it used to be known, and if ever a man put the white into the Russian, it’s Hleb. He has a pale face, blond hair, and for periods of his first season with Arsenal it seemed the gifted, fragile anaemic midfielder might be blown off course by a strong gust of wind. He was a ghostly impersonation of a star summer signing. （Hleb來自白俄羅斯，臉色白晰一頭金髮的他，雖然有才能，但是他的瘦弱身材好像被強風一吹就會被吹走一樣） The later stages of the Champions League corrected that impression. It was a surprise that Hleb was named in the starting team to face Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the first knockout round. Arsene Wenger left Robert Pires on the bench and chose Hleb and Emmanuel Eboue to take charge of a flank, Arsenal’s right, that would be occupied by Madrid’s Roberto Carlos, the best attacking left-back of the modern era, Zinedine Zidane and Brazilian prodigy Robinho. He had come to Arsenal as a number 10, a give-the-ball-to- me type of player operating just behind the centre-forward with a penchant for launching runs from deep and dribbling to the opposing penalty area. You don't have many now. This was always going to be a transitional season. It’s different, the football is faster. I can still be a lot better. Put to him that today’s Premiership meeting with Manchester United finds Arsenal in the odd position of kingmakers in what might remain of a title race — Arsenal lose and United keep up the pursuit of Chelsea, Arsenal win and west London edges nearer to the domestic prize — and he laughs: “So you want me to talk democracy?” Then he turns serious. “As a team we’re coming together. We’re not looking at Chelsea, but we want to win every game and if we’d started the season better, we’d be challenging. I felt very tired afterwards. It was tougher than against Aston Villa.
