Smith, Aliadiere,與J.Hoyte Arsenal's loan rangers - how they fared last term By Mo Khan Three of Arsenal's brightest young prospects enjoyed loan spells away from Highbury during the 2005/06 season as they sought valuable first-team experience in a bid to break into Arse`ne Wenger's side. Here's how each of Arsenal's loan rangers fared... Justin Hoyte Sunderland Justin spent the entire 2005/06 campaign on loan at the Stadium of Light with Sunderland. Here's what Ian Laws of the Sunderland Echo had to say about the defender: "He was a bit of an unknown commodity for Sunderland fans when he first came here [but] he hit the ground running and did quite well in the early stages. He showed a lot of potential and I think the fans warmed to him. That certainly showed with the sort of reception he got in the final home game of the season - he was substituted in the Fulham game and he got a fantastic ovation. His pace made him a good recovery tackler and he liked to get forward. He also got himself a very important goal for Sunderland, albeit in a game that they lost. He scored in the Tyne-Wear derby and if you do that you ’re never really going to be forgotten in Sunderland. It was a fantastic goal and I said to him at the time that he must have forgotten he was playing for Sunderland and not Arsenal because he charged forward from one box to the other to score it. He's a whole-hearted guy who gave everything. I spoke to him just before he left and he said even though it's been a really difficult season, it was still a big learning experience for him. I think he'll go back to Arsenal with quite a bit more confidence." Jeremie Aliadiere Celtic, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers Jeremie began the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Celtic but returned to London with West Ham soon after the season began due to a lack to playing opportunities. Unfortunately, the talented Frenchman encountered similar difficulties at Upton Park before heading to the Midlands with Wolves in January. We asked Steve Marshall of the Wolverhampton Express and Star to give his take on Aliadiere's spell at Molineux. "Glenn Hoddle signed Jeremie Aliadiere at the end of the January transfer window. It was bit of a gamble on him at the time but, by and large, most people say that Jeremie did very well during his time at the Club. He began with a couple of games coming off the bench but after scoring on his full debut, an away game at Hull at the end of February, he started every single game. Jeremie had to play a couple of different positions. He didn’t always play as an out-and-out central striker — he was asked to play out wide some of the time in accordance with the manager's system. But he acquitted himself pretty well and scored two good goals. He alternated between both flanks and sometimes he'd alternate during the game as well. He certainly put opposition defences on the back foot with his pace and I can remember a couple of occasions where he picked the ball up deep, turned and ran at the heart of the opposition defence. He caused havoc that way - people had difficulty coping with it. I would say his pace and close control certainly caught the eye." Ryan Smith Leicester City Ryan began the season playing regularly for Arsenal’s second-string but joined Championship side Leicester City last September for a five-month loan spell before returning to London to complete the season at Highbury. We asked Bill Anderson of the Leicester Mercury for his take on the fleet-footed winger: "Ryan was a breath of fresh air to begin with. He made his debut as a substitute against Derby and looked a very bright prospect - that’s why Leicester tried to get him until the end of the season. He only went back [to Arsenal] because the Club felt the nitty-gritty of battling against the drop would be unfair on him. He was certainly part of what Craig Levein hoped would be a revival and that's why Levein fought to get him to stay on loan until the end of the season. The fans liked him - once he got the ball there was always this sort of murmur of anticipation because he is very fast and very tricky. He had some exceptionally good games in the league and on some occasions he was man-of-the-match. I think his skill and his speed and the fact he was brought up in the Arsenal way of bright, direct attacking were his best features. He certainly brightened up the place in terms of his fast, skilful, play. From our point of view he looks to have all the attributes of a player who could make it all the way."
