As sad as it sounds, I have been watching recordings of the Champions League games against Juventus, Villareal, Real Madrid and a few Premiership games. I am missing football because the World Cup did not deliver anything for me. Anyway it is good to see recorded games without stress. In a way, you see more. In the light of the fact that we are told we are unlikely to sign any more players (I expect we will see one or two though), I was wondering how good the current team would be for next season. From watching these old games, I found some really interesting things. First, we are going to miss Pires. When Pires is playing well he has enormous possession capabilities and he has an eye for a good pass. I also found that Pires is the only person Henry had an understanding with. Flamini actually has fantastic basic skills. He rarely loses the ball because of ball control deficiency and he is incredibly athletic. Flamini's attitude more than anything else allowed him to cope at left-back. It wasn't anything that he learned, it was simply that he did not fear the situation.His recovery is incredible. Flamini came across some of Europe's and the Premiership's best defenders and dealt with them using recovery rather than defensive skills. Lauren is also one of few Arsenal players who has real grit and is arguably the most experienced player at Arsenal besides Lehmann and Gilberto. Toure and Gilberto are in my view Arsenal's most important players. I would say Fabregas is next in line. I am still amazed watching these games just how rarely Fabregas loses the ball. In the games I watched, it was two or less per game. That is incredible. It's more than 500% better than Pires or Henry. It also turns out that Fabregas and Reyes make far more runs forward off the ball than anyone else including Henry. Reyes wins a lot of free kicks. Most free kicks in Henry's shooting range are won by Reyes. Reyes is also the one Arsenal player that tends to dive. One interesting mystery is that nobody ever finds Reyes when he makes runs. We have often accused Henry of not passing to Reyes but looking at these games and others show that for some reason nobody can seem to pick Reyes out even when they try to make the pass. Fabregas, Hleb and Pires look to find Reyes just as often as they do Henry but it rarely gets through in a decisive situation. (譯註:這段很好笑,是不是雷耶太矮啊?XD以致於找不到他) I have learned to appreciate Reyes more by watching him. His work-rate is phenomenal and he is constantly trying to get into the game. I have never noted him to give up when things are going badly and I believe that if his team mates show trust and belief in him, he will reward us all twice over. Henry / Pires is finished and that leaves Gilberto / Fabregas that is working very well. Hleb works well with Eboue and Fabregas but those are not solid partnerships. I believe the lack of partnerships is the reason why Arsenal can easily lose morale when things are going badly – this is why we lost a disproportionate number of games last season. There were only a few games where the team had a cohesive spirit. Arsenal also rely on football a lot. We love that about our team but when football fails, the painful process of getting it back again is not built in this team. In the Double-winning teams, there were enough players with guts and balls to ride the rough moments long enough for the team to find its rhythm again. This team is still struggling to find its leaders. Toure and Lehmann are too far back. This season, Fabregas is not young anymore. Lehmann is playing for his last trophy and Toure knows that he is the man without Sol Campbell. Gilberto is assured of his importance, Hleb has completed a season, Senderos has led his country's defence and Lauren will be back. (略)意思是這賽季大家都更成熟了,更應該跳出來承擔責任. If all these leaders can find their voice in Ashburton Grove then Arsenal's first team should be good enough for anyone. Remember the star defenders in the World Cup – Cannavaro, Thuram, Zambrotta? The star keeper Buffon? The star midfielders Vieira and Camaronessi? Well they came to Highbury and were beaten by this team so our first team is good enough. 還記得世界盃的明星後衛卡納瓦羅,圖拉姆,贊不羅塔,守門員布逢? 明星中場維耶拉,卡莫拉內西? Well,他們來到海布裡都被現在這支隊伍幹掉過,所以我們的第一隊絕對是夠好的. Our squad however is thin. Very thin on experience in defence (there's basically no cover) but we don't have a thin squad in midfield and attack anymore. I would have loved Torres at Arsenal but I have to agree with Wenger that we have enough forwards. We are not Chelsea, so we can't buy player just to stop them going to our rivals. 但是在後防線上,陣容仍然是太單薄,但慶幸的是鋒線上我們不再陽春, 誰都愛托雷斯,但是我們相信溫格的話--我們有夠多的鋒線了, 我們不是切爾西,也不會只是為了不讓球員跑到對手那邊而買球員. Rosicky would allow us to replace Fabregas and move Hleb, Ljungberg and Reyes around while I am now more confident in Flamini covering Gilberto. I wish he was as tall as Gilberto. But we should be ok in midfield. 羅西奇給了我們替補小法布及輪替赫來布,勇伯跟雷耶斯的可能性, 對佛拉米尼替補吉爾柏托也更有信心了,當然希望他有跟吉爾柏托一樣高就好了! 我們在中場會是OK的. I also wrote a few sentences here last year about the Danish teenager Bendtner. I really like him and I would like to see him play instead of going on loan. I think he is a very different striker to anything that Wenger has ever had. Bendtner是溫格擁有的前鋒裡最不同類型的一個,希望他有更多機會上場,而不是租借出去.
