But the Arsenal chief's response to his board was to keep the money in the bank. Wenger has all he needs to mount a challenge on every front this season without resorting to the chequebook. He put out a second-string side which sparkled with youthful enthusiasm and dominated a virtually full-strength Newcastle in this Carling Cup clash. Had it not been for Toon keeper Shay Given, this game would have been over long before Arsenal eventually scored twice in the last seven minutes. The goals came with Nicklas Bendtner's header and Denilson's 20-yard screamer. This was a seventh successive victory for the Gunners, for whom everything is turning to gold right now. The balance sheet is healthy and the young squad is brimming with confidence. Make no mistake, Arsenal have strength in depth like no other team in the Premier League. Chelsea try to buy their way to success, Wenger develops it. Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce reckoned his team were battle weary from having to play two games in three days after Sunday's TV encounter with West Ham. He felt this match should have been moved to today - even though Arsenal's neighbours Spurs are at home - to give his side extra recovery time. But he also pointed to three gilt-edged chances missed by Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins. Toon new-boy Jose Enrique, a ?6.5m summer signing from Villarreal, created the first opening on 10 minutes when he sent over a gem of a cross towards Martins at the far post. The Nigerian, who was chased by the Gunners during the summer, was on target with his header but Polish debutant keeper Lukasz Fabianski plunged to his left to push the ball away. James Milner popped a ball over the top of Philippe Senderos and Martins brought it down on his chest and created space in the area. He had time to measure his volley but took a wild swipe and lashed it high and wide. Arsenal were denied time and again by Given, who has lost his first-team place to Steve Harper. Emmanuel Eboue, playing his first game since August 15, saw a 20-yard drive well saved and a close-range shot beaten away. Theo Walcott was also foiled by Given and Eduardo's effort was headed off the line by Charles N'Zogbia. Martins went down in a vain attempt to win a penalty after Senderos stumbled but he was the only one in the ground who thought he had a case. Arsenal controlled the second half but it was not until the 83rd minute that they finally found a way through. Eduardo fed Armand Traore down the left, he crossed and Danish star Bendtner climbed to head beyond Given for his first Gunners goal. Newcastle suddenly broke and Martins skipped round the advancing Fabianski only for Senderos to clear off the line. With a minute left, Denilson unleashed a scorching right-foot drive into the top corner. A full house of 60,000 went home very happy. Watching the reserves is every bit as entertaining as the main men.
