William Gallas captained the side in Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Salzburg sparking rumours that the Frenchman was next in line to take the armband. If Gallas were appointed the decision could well be met with some friction by Gunners supporters following the centre back's recent controversial comments. Earlier this month Gallas claimed that "several players are questioning the club's future" and he was "not at Arsenal for third place". Wenger though explained that right now his main priority is to get his squad fit. "We go game by game right now. At the moment the captain problem is not the biggest one. The biggest problem is to be fit," he told Arsenal TV Online. The French tactician admitted that Gallas has all the credentials to wear the armband and hinted that he is likely to appoint a defensive player. Wenger said: "In every game you need a captain. William has all the ingredients needed to be a captain along with Kolo (Toure) and Gilberto. He has a lot of experience. "Also centre back is the best position to captain the team because you are in a position to see all the problems on the pitch. It is a better position than a centre forward or a wide player." The Arsenal manager also revealed that he might not replace winger Freddie Ljungberg, saying: "Well not necessarily no.
