Former Arsenal powerbroker David Dein is stepping down from his position as
chairman of Alisha Usmanov's shareholding company in order to improve the
Russian billionaire's relationship with the club.
Usmanov is now the major shareholder at the Emirates Stadium, with just short
of 25 per cent, but the Arsenal board will not do business with him while
arch-enemy Dein heads his Arsenal vehicle, Red & White Holdings.

Dein had a hugely acrimonious split with the club a year and a half ago when
he facilitated American sports magnate Stan Kroenke's buying of the ITV
shareholding before selling his own 14 per cent stake to Usmanov for about ￡
75m.
Since then, football visionary Dein, who was one of the first to predict the
foreign invasion of super-wealthy Premier League club owners - and the need
for Arsenal to embrace the new breed of investors - has helped Usmanov
quickly increase his stake in the club.
But Dein realises that there is now no chance of Usmanov having the type of
input into Arsenal - and a possible seat on the board - his shareholding
merits while the former Arsenal vice-chairman remains so closely tied to him,
such is the hostility towards Dein.
However, Dein, who will celebrate his 65th birthday tomorrow, loves football
too much to walk away. He is likely to take up a position with UEFA or FIFA,
but will not join any other club other than his beloved Arsenal.
