The Arsenal defender began in his customary left-back role against Azerbaijan before stepping into central midfield after the interval to claim goals five and six in a 7-0 rout. Michael Mancienne opened the scoring after 48 seconds, before Azerbaijan goalkeeper Elchin Sadigov doubled the advantage by deflecting a James Tomkins effort into his own goal. Gibbs then provided Craig Gardner with the third goal following a pinpoint long pass from the defender. After the break, Lee Cattermole made it 4-0 with a volley before Gibbs netted his brace, both set up by Danny Rose.
