Padres exercise Akinori Otsuka's option
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today announced that the
club has exercised the 2006 contractual option for right-handed
pitcher Akinori Otsuka. At the same time, the club declined to
exercise the option in infielder/outfielder Eric Young's contract.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the
announcements.
Otsuka, 33, went 2-8 with one save and a 3.59 ERA (25 ER/62.2 IP)
in 66 relief appearances for the Padres in 2005. During the month
of July, Otsuka did not allow an earned run in his 10 appearances,
spanning 10.2 innings.
Over parts of two Major League seasons with the Padres (2004-05),
Otsuka compiled a 9-10 record with three saves and a 2.57 ERA
(40 ER/140.0 IP) in 139 relief outings. During the 2004 season,
his 1.75 ERA (15 ER/77.1 IP) was the lowest-ever mark by a Padres'
reliever making at least 70 appearances in a single season.
