PETERSBURG – The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed third baseman Akinori Iwamura on the 15-day disabled list today with a right oblique strain. To replace him on the roster, the club recalled infielder Jorge Cantu from its Class AAA affiliate, the Durham Bulls. Iwamura, 28, was signed from the Yakult Swallows of the Japanese Central League during the offseason by the Devil Rays to a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year. He was a five-time All-Star for the Swallows and also won six Golden Gloves with the club. Iwamura had played in 18 of the team's first 19 games and had made an immediate impression with both his bat and his glove. He is currently ninth in the American League in hitting at .339 (19-for-56) after going 2-for-3 with two walks in the Devil Rays' 10-8 victory over the New York Yankees Monday night. Iwamura leads the Rays in on-base percentage at .479 (5th in AL), runs scored with 15 (T-6th) and walks with 15 (4th). He has hit safely in 14 of 17 starts and has scored the tying or winning run in six of Tampa Bay’s eight victories. In the field, he has made just one error. Cantu, 25, was the last player cut by the Devil Rays this spring. Following a breakout season in 2005 when he hit 28 home runs, drove in 117 runs and batted .286, Cantus slumped to 14 homers, 62 RBI and a .249 average in an injury-plagued 2006 season. He was batting .267 (20-for-75) at Durham with five doubles, a triple and eight RBI in 19 games. Cantu is capable of playing second or third base and likely will see play at the latter position with the emergence of B.J. Upton at second base.
